Programs

Six areas of work. They overlap in practice — a family session in Mwiki is also peace work, and a youth forum is often where a later activity starts.

Youth

Most of this is with young people who are out of school or out of work. Sessions cover mentorship, leadership, life skills and how to start something small of their own. Some groups also take part in local peace activities.

Across the organization’s work, more than 1,400 young people have gone through some form of this. In Mathare, one forum alone linked 122 young people who were using drugs to counselling and follow-up.

  • Mentorship and leadership
  • Life skills and entrepreneurship
  • Youth peace activities

Women

Women’s groups come for practical training: how the group handles money, how decisions get made, and what kind of income work is realistic. When a group wants to raise something with local leadership, advocacy is part of the same conversation.

More than 100 groups have been supported this way.

  • Financial literacy
  • Group governance
  • Income-generating activities
  • Advocacy

Peace and conflict

Forums on conflict are usually held with local leaders. The aim is to get people into the same room before a dispute hardens, and to give young people a part in that conversation.

  • Community dialogue
  • Conflict resolution and peace education
  • Sensitization meetings

Children

In places such as Korogocho, the work with children is mentorship and psychosocial support, plus a link to people who already have a duty to protect them. The children include those living on the street and others with very little at home.

  • Mentorship and life skills
  • Psychosocial support
  • Links to child protection

Families

Separated families in Mwiki have been the focus of two kinds of sessions. One is training on responsibility, respect, communication and co-parenting after a split. The other is psychosocial support: group counselling, peer support, ways of handling stress, and a referral if someone needs a professional.

  • Family values and co-parenting
  • Group counselling and peer support
  • Stress management and referral

Community development

The wider work includes civic education, environmental activities and helping a group organise itself. These have been part of projects in 10 counties, usually with a local partner rather than on our own.

  • Community mobilisation
  • Civic education
  • Environmental conservation
  • Social inclusion
